A week ago, reports surfaced of a Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor mega fight in the works. Mayweather, in an interview with Fight Hype, seemed to encourage the rumors, going so far as to suggest that he himself may have started them.
In a later interview, Mayweather was even more emphatic, stating he “absolutely” thought the fight would happen, and yesterday indicated that both cities and dates had been identified for the bout with McGregor.
As for McGregor, the MMA specialist provided his own bit of promotion for the possible fight with an Instagram poster of himself and Mayweather in a nose-to-nose stare down.
Earlier today, the Irish fighter posted another tease to Twitter.
I run boxing.

While both combatants of a Mayweather vs McGregor card seem to be on board, UFC president Dana White — who has McGregor under contract — has not been nearly as supportive of the fight’s prospects. Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless of ESPN First Take have been similarly dismissive of the fight’s merits, calling it a “clown show,” while conceding that they would pay to watch should it go down.
For Mayweather the fight not only represents another major payday, but the opportunity to improve his record to a perfect 50-0. There is little doubt he would be willing to take a break from TMT’s music promotion and get back in the ring to do what he does best — novelty or not.

Mayweather vs McGregor wouldn’t be one anyone’s radar had McGregor not been dropped from the UFC 200 card for not fulfilling promotional obligations. Longtime UFC commentator and resident philosopher Joe Rogan feels the popular middleweight made a miscalculation with his mock retirement and in challenging the UFC’s dictates, but will nonetheless most likely appear in UFC 201 or 202 for a rematch with Nate Diaz.
