During Saturday’s game with the Warriors, Charlotte Hornets guard Lance Stephenson slapped himself in the face trying to draw a foul call. Compounding the self-inflicted insult, Stephenson will likely be slapped with a fine by the league for his odd embellishment to the standard flop.

As strange as it is to slap oneself in the face, there is a lyrical precedent in the Jane Addiction’s song “Of Course” from Ritual de lo Habitual. The album came out in 1990 — the same year Stephenson was born. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not…

OF COURSE
Of course this land is dangerous!
All of the animals
Are capably murderous.
Of course this land is dangerous!
All of the animals
Are capably murderous.
When I was a boy,
My big brother held on to my hands,
Then he made me slap my own face.
I looked up to him then, and still do.
He was trying to teach me something.
Now I know what it was!
Now I know what he meant!
Now I know how it is!
One must eat the other
Who runs free before him.
Put them right into his mouth
While fantasizing the beauty of his movements.
A sensation not unlike
Slapping yourself in the face…
Slapping yourself in the face…
Slapping yourself in the face…

Stephenson may have found inspiration in the sporting world itself, as demonstrated by professional pool player Tony Drago during a meltdown at the conclusion of a 2012 tournament.
