D’Angelo Russell’s road to the NBA has taken him from coast to coast and a few places in between.

Born in Louisville, Russell attended his hometown Central High for a year before transferring to Montverde Academy boarding school in Florida. He returned to the midwest on a basketball scholarship to Ohio State, where he starred during the 2014-15 season.

Although he would stay in Columbus for just a year, Russell left his mark — in a game against Rutgers he became the first freshman in school history to record a triple double (23 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists).

Valued for his elite ball handling and passing skills, the Los Angeles Lakers made Russell the surprise second overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, with fan-favorite and USBWA National Freshman of the Year Jahlil Okafor still on the board.

As the days count down to Russell’s pro debut, VICE Sports took a ride around LA with the 19-year-old while he waxed philosophical on the trappings of success.

It will be interesting to see if Russell, paired with an invigorated Kobe Bryant, can bring some of the Showtime magic back to Staples this year.
